Quickly and easily calculate the surface area of your slanted roof

Easily calculate the surface area of a slanted roof when you can't reach everywhere = floor area x multiplication factor of the roof pitch.

This is useful for, for example:

  • solar panels
  • roof insulation

Calculating roof surface for solar panels? Also save energy with biobased roof insulation

First, a quick note...

Many people want to calculate the roof area of their house to determine how many solar panels they can install. However, generating energy solely with solar panels is becoming less profitable. Having solar panels in the Netherlands is becoming less lucrative. An investment in insulation always pays off because you save energy and thus costs.

Therefore, use the house scan below. It calculates your approximate floor area from publicly accessible data. Divide this by the number of floors you have, and you'll know the footprint of your slanted roof.

You can then proceed with the house scan and take the step towards a better insulated roof and a lower ecological footprint with biobased insulation in just 2 minutes.

Calculating the roof surface area of your slanted roof

Calculating the square meters of walls and floors is quite simple. But calculating the surface area of a slanted roof is a bit trickier if there are obstructions in your attic or if the roof is too high to measure properly. Fortunately, we have an easy trick for that. Here's how to easily calculate the surface area of your slanted roof in 4 steps.

1. Find out the floor area of the ground floor of your house, or follow the footprint of where the house stands.

  • If you have a house with many complex shapes, determine the area of the individual shapes and then add all the parts together.
  • And if you have a two-story house with a living area of 120 m2, use the square meters of one floor (60 m2).

2. Determine the pitch of your roof, or how much the roof rises in 30 cm. For example, if your roof rises 20 cm for every 30 cm, then your roof pitch is 20/30.

3. Multiply the floor area of your ground floor by the roof pitch multiplication factor.

4. Do this as follows: if you have a roof pitch of 20/30 on your house and 60 square meters of floor area from one floor of the house, find the multiplication factor in the table, in your case 1.202, and use the following formula:
